El Torcal

Villanueva de la Concepcion is located within the foothills of the "El Torcal Natural Park" mountain range, approximately 40km's north of Malaga. This area is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the costa's and the generally percieved view of southern spain.

The area is dominated by "El Torcal", which provides a stunning backdrop to the village. At about 500m above sea level the village offers a healthy alternative to the smog and humidity of the coast.

There are many walks that can be explored in the natural park, however, most will need sensible footware and a certain level of fitness to be able to negotiate and enjoy the rocky terrain.

Please don't expect pay booths, roped off areas and a guided tour - what you do get is a discreet set of markers that let you enjoy a natural trail with which you can explore nature at her finest.

A mirador (viewing area) is located a short distance from the car park, offering stunning panoramic views across Villanueva de la Concepcion and the distant mountains that run down to the coast.

El Torcal

The primary source of wealth for the Villanueva district is agriculture. The growing of various staples, including olives and wheat together with the production of olive oil, helps this area to retain a traditional feel, whilst embracing modern technologies.

While many of the youngsters within the village have the necessary "mod cons", it is still possible to see the ice delivery man being pulled along by his oxen or the older generation sitting astride a donkey when working in the fields.

The nearest large town to Villanueva de la Concepcion is the small city of Antequera, which is situated 20km away on the northern side of "El Torcal" - a spectacular drive around the eastern fringes of the mountain range.

Antequera is known as the "crossroads of Andalucia" due to its historic road connections -North to Cordoba, South to Malaga, West to Seville and finally East to Granada. The city benefits from a large selection of bars, restuarants and shopping facilities, however, much of what can be achieved in Antequera can also be realised within Villanueva de la Concepcion itself.

Olive groves

Whilst Villanueva de la Concepcion is the focal point for the area, there are many communities in the surrounding district such as Pastelero, La Higuera and Almogia which have become home to foreign nationals in addition to the local population.
